I spotted the most amazing culinary products while on a day trip in Arnhem eons ago. I'm definitely planning a weekend breakfast shoot with my amazing purchase but I can't wait that long to show you the designer who caught my eye.

Niels Datema is a young versatile designer that studied in Eindhoven (yea), designing also furniture and lighting but it's his tableware and culinary products that have me most abuzz. I'm stoked that Serax brought several into production because my inner kitchen princess is drooling... homemade bread anyone?

I enjoy sleeping in and especially staying in.  A good weekend is a slow weekend…spent in bed. Waking with the sun streaming through the windows, having a late breakfast under the covers and spending the day online. Reading, shopping and working here. Basically glued to a screen with munchies at hand.
But since I’m a crumb-a-phobe with an overheated laptop, it was time for a bed tray. When I saw the Skogsta cutting board from Ikea, I knew exactly what I wanted. I mean it’s the perfect size for my laptop, so how amazing would it be as a bed tray?
I think it’s pretty darned amazing. Oiled to bring out the wood grain and a set of hairpin legs and we’re good to go. The hanging hole makes the perfect spot to guide my cables or pop my magazine in.
This is my perfect slow weekend. Lazing in bed in my oh-so wrong it’s right bed robe, with an amazing amount of pillows and cushion. My ultimate breakfast treat of extra strong, super sweet percolator coffee with a plateful of homemade Italian cookies form my favourite delicatessen. And after that surfing like crazy till I need my next snack...
 Have a great (slow) weekend!

P.S. the Australian snapper (salted caramel & almond nougat dark chocolate) is addictively good..

Cool enough

Recreating the ordinary into the meaningful? Attachment to everyday objects? Products that reflect, intergrate and enhance our day to day life? Less design, more stories! Quite a feat but I think Cool Enough Studio pull it off. Stylish and minimalist.

I spotted this design studio at S2 20, which is an amazing Nordic inspired webshop, that you should definitely check out. I immediately made a purchase and promise I'll get around to shooting that spread soon but I couldn't wait to showcase this brand's idea and aesthetic.

The sleekest mirror around that begs to be looked at as well as looked in. Huhu cushion is a godsend for a fidgeter like me. The minimalist and oh so versatile hanger..think shoes or even annoying spaghett-straps. For me the perfect piece for my nervous routine of selecting my entire outfit, down to the shoes, the night before...

Fashion wishlist!

What of the the things I hear most when I'm slightly distracted on my phone is "you're shopping aren't you?" I try to defend myself with the trusty "I'm just looking". Here's is what I'm just looking at now...

This smooth raw-edge draped skirt from Cos has been on my mind for weeks. Same goes for the perfect accessories for the coming autumn winds; the felt hat with a twist with the snake chain. From Lanvin. I hate to admit but Zara is a go-to for cool, affordable fashions. Current favourites; stone leather culottes yes please and the oversized blouse with split back for effortless cool. Loving white trainers and these toecap snakeskin trainers by Adidas are nigh on perfect.

Sorting the holiday pics reminded me of just how much dessert I consumed. For me it was the local sweets, chock full of sweetened coconut, drenched in sweet syrup and topped with crunchy nuts. Being lactose intolerant these are so much better but mostly I just love these flavors and they remind me of childhood sweets. And then I also found something I’ve been searching for a while; doughnut pans. I love fried doughnuts but sometimes you just crave something a little lighter. And so middle eastern flavors and western baking pans collided.
The results? Doughnuts with swirls of sweetened desiccated coconut and drenched in rose water simple syrup and topped with crushed pistachios. But you know me by now..that’s not all. What’s better than doughnuts? Miniature doughnuts of course! The mini’s are flavoured with orange and lemon zest and drenched in orange blossom water syrup and topped with cinnamon almond slivers.
I served my east meet west babies with hot and sweet Turkish apple tea and I was instantly transported back to sunny afternoons and sweet treats.
Prep
The simple syrup is 1 cup of water, 1 cup of sugar, a squeeze of lemon and a teaspoon rose water/orange blossom water. Boil and simmer till thickened and reduced. Let cool.
Roast a handful of slivered almonds with a half teaspoon cinnamon and a half teaspoon dark brown sugar on low heat till lightly caramelised. Break into small clusters.
For the sweet coconut filling melt 2 tablespoons of full-cream butter. Add 100 grams of desiccated coconut and two teaspoons of fine white sugar, mix and set aside.

Crush or chop a handful of pistachio's nuts.
Doughnuts
Combine 2 cups of (patent) flour, two teaspoons of baking powder, ¾ cup fine white sugar and 1 teaspoon salt in a mixer. While on low add 2 eggs,  ¾ cup buttermilk and 2 tablespoons melted butter. Transfer half the batter to a separate container.

For the zesty doughnuts add one teaspoon each of orange and lemon zest and the zest of one lemon for added colour. Bake for 5 minutes.
For the coconut doughnuts place a spoonful of the coconut mixture on top and sprinkle with the almond mixture. Bake for 8 minutes.
Rest for 5 minutes in the pan. Transfer to a wire rack for five more minutes. Prick holes on the underside only and transfer to a shallow bowl.  Drizzle the minis with the orange blossom syrup. Drizzle the coconut doughnuts with the rose water syrup.

Rest another 5 minutes and repeat. Sprinkle the pistachios over the minis and the remaining coconut mix on the larger doughnuts. Voila. You now have 10 coconut crunchy almond bad boys and 40 fresh and zesty minis.

Pictures say a thousand words but I'm super hesitant about posting pictures of us. I have been trying to overcome that recently. I still freak out everything I post something with even the smallest bit of me in it but I'm getting there. Plus my kids flipping rock!!

This is our trip to the Red Sea in Egypt. It's the hottest place I've ever been and had the warmest sea 'breeze' I ever felt (blow dryer to the face much..) but we had a blast. We sent pretty much all our time at the swimming  pool, where the kids had their favourite treat of hotdogs, fries and churros. I pretty much stuffed my face with sweet treats at every meal but more about that in Monday's post...

For now here a few scenes from everything from a trip to the zoo, taking in a show at the dolphin park, mini sand sculptures to my babe's 5th birthday, dancing the night away, girl time selfies, airport goofing and everything in between. This trip made me super happy and grateful. It's a bit nerveracking (I won't admit that to a certain someone) to take that first trip together and then with kids but hopefully you can see we're happy, mismatched, rejigged and all!

Have a great weekend!

Idol iron art

I saw this piece by Michael Tomalik over at Crowdyhouse and knew I had to share. It's installation art meets furniture meets interior design! There is little nook for pretty much everything you need, whilst lounging from books, plants to a lamp and even a bottle of booze.

This is pretty much me at home, propped up on cushions with everything at arm's reach, but magnified.

posted about my love for Ryan Storer and now I want to show you.

The good thing about bouts of insomnia is being awake at 3am during sale season. The same brands and sizes that are sold out during the day, magically reappear in the ungodly hours. Such was the case with this ring.

It was dubbed a tie pin and I'll go with that. I love the irregular shape which lends this noticeable piece a minimal and fluid line. So eye-catching you needn't wear any other accessories.
