Nirvana

Peace, serenity, bliss, tranquility... all of these are words that are polar opposites to the way I'm feeling, halfway through week 4 of semi lock-down. I am by nature a complete homebody and I was feeling pretty emotional at leaving the newborn to go back to work early (what was I thinking), so you would think that being home would be easy.

Nope, not so much. I mean at first I was happy and excited to see my partner for more that the 30 minutes between the kids bedtime and ours and being 'teach Lisa' gave me purpose and a chance to really understand what my kids do at school. But somehow, somewhere, this week things changed. Like a switch. I no longer feel like sitting cramped in an armchair so my partner can have the desk. I am tired of running up and down the stairs to help the kids with schoolwork, at the workstations that were quickly thrown together in their rooms. Nor do I feel like expressing milk for the baby, while answering questions in said cramped position. Trying to meditate while brushing my teeth is anything but grounding. Don't get me wrong, I love my family but what I need right now is space. Space around me, but mostly space within me..in my head to be exact.

I'm big on space. I want it, I crave it, I need it. Space to breathe, to think, to reflect. As important to me as the actual air I breathe. My mind is always whirling and spinning. A constant hum of bleeps and thoughts. So having little time and space just by myself for myself, has reached it's limit. So here I am, in the office, at the desk, with the door closed, breathing. An hour or two, in silence. A window of silent, contemplative space, my nirvana. My mental morning walk in the forest, amazing in the simple happiness and joy of trees blooming in the spring.

Noah Sky

I don't know when I last wrote a post. I actually couldn't remember how to log in ๐Ÿ‘€. It's been that long. One of the main reasons being Noah, my little New Year's baby. Noah has firmly claimed his birthright as baby numero uno. However Jaime is not giving up without a fight. Let the baby battles and zombie mom wars commence..

Doubts of a mother

Okay, I wrote this three months ago but life has been busier and more stressful of late. One of the reasons is that baby four is on the way! And finally, just finally, am I starting to really embrace it. Despite, wanting a fourth since the day little Jaime was born, it hit me hard when I finally realised I was not on perma-bloat. The questions and doubts started flying.. Is this (still) the right time, can we do this, can we give each child what they need and most importantly What do I even have to offer?

Life is not easy, we struggle from weekday to weekend as they are never enough hours in the day. I can barely find the time to be alone with my thoughts much less really recharge. I feel forever balancing between expectations, as a mom, colleague and partner and feel like I am constantly failing at all. So how can I provide, care and love yet another helpless and innocent human being?

In my heart and soul I believe the world is so much more beautiful for each child that was raised with (self) confidence, love and empathy. Imagine how wonderful it would be if we were all raised to be the brightest star we can be?

My oldest son has been so weighed down by expectations that I did not realise how much he had stopped being himself, stopped shining. Head happily in the clouds and sudden outbursts of happy stories no one can follow or at least not me, all but dwindled.

That’s coming back and so is his strenght, drive and acumen. Once again, shining brightly in his own way. And it’s mostly this head on bump in his happiness that has me doubting myself. To feel like I’m failing at being the mom my kids needs, made it that much harder to be happy about this little-not so little bump.

But it is also this struggle that makes me know as deeply, that this little innocent has found his home, his mom. When you cry, I crack. When you smile, I shine. When you (out)succeed (me), I rejoice. When you find your strenght, passion and purpose, then will I have succeeded. I will constantly doubt if I am what you need. And that is why I know that I do have something to offer you: Me. My heart and humility. They were already yours. I realise that now. It was never about others approval but about me embracing my doubts. My four are both the heart in this tin woman’s body and the courage in the cowardly. That's what motherhood means to me.

Dragons and knights

I’ve started this so many times but each time it felt too personal and I couldn’t finish. So here goes attempt ..

You are special and unique. How many times, hopefully, did you hear this as a child or tell it as a parent, teacher, caregiver etc.? But how much it is believed? How unique are you really allowed to be? I’m not talking about the way you look or how you choose to express yourself. But how much room is there for spirit, character and will?

The meek shall one day inherit the world? Or is the world forever geared to the go-getters, the socializers, the askers, the takers, the do-ers. But what if you are not so much defined by doing or even thinking, but more by feeling? And with a internal compass so strong, it guides your every step, whether you want to or not. You know what you want and you have to do what is right. What’s right? You just know. From soul to gut to thoughts to actions.

I’ve often wondered and doubted if there is room and acceptance for the soft of voice and strong in spirit. It’s easy to appreciate and love the outgoing kid, the one everyone easily likes and is helpful to a fault. But what of the quiet one, taking it all-in, processing, analyzing, learning, and secretly all the while trying. The awkward one, who finds it hard to ask to join a group, but is the first one to tell the other kids to stop damaging the playground toys or when the rules are not being followed. Littlest in the group or not, hear me roar. Strength under softness. To stand up and be counted, especially when you want to sit down and be quiet.

Do you sigh under your breath and think here we go again or do you embrace the beauty and depth of this child, as wholly as the outgoing, fun loving one? Or do you not even see the beauty, the soul, the depth or just the plain fact that they are trying, trying their best. Their best is often actually to be what you want. Even when it is not who they are. Imagine battling your dragon, your iron will and your knight?

I am this child. I just grew up and grew cold. It only started really aching again when I look at my son. A mirror I rather not see. Because I banished my dragon and my knight. To deep dusty corners. But then I see that look in his eyes and I’m right there with him. As small but strong. How can others not understand the things you say, when you speak no words or what is behind the words you do speak. When no one seems to see the little telltale signs, the eye-avoidance, the finger snapping (my child time pinching myself), the self-doubt, the inner battle. Your strength is no greater than your heart is soft. The strongest of will and the softest of heart.

The lump in my throat, the catch in my breath, the tears in eyes, is  because because in hiding my own dragon and knight, I forget to cherish yours. To be that soft, stable place, where you can be yourself, where you don’t have to do battle. To teach you that your dragon is as important and beautiful as your knight. In fact your dragon is part of your knight. What is strength without moral, without heart? Let your compass guide you, not mine. Never dim your fire. Never lose your will. Never hide them. They are part of what makes you special and unique. And that makes you beautiful. And as bright as the sun.

Voor Mika, my fiery dragon with the sensitive soul.
I see you, altijd, mama draak.

Sharing is caring. I'm not sure if I ever really subscribed to that idea or if I was just caught up in the hype. When I discovered Instagram, I loved it for but yet haven't opened it in almost two years. Fake, materialistic and constantly wanting to one up left me exhausted. Facebook, I still check regularly and I finally saw some real use come of it in the wake of hurricane Irma. But on a whole I secretly long to deactivate it, save the cute memory pictures that pop up of the kids. I don't share those because face it, we all have our own cute little memories and that's just it,.. it is my cute and that's not necessarily yours. I feel like it's a looking glass with the depth of a puddle.

The real reason for not blogging these past months, is the lack of connection. Look at me, look at me, look at this little part of me, is not me. It's not authentic. Seeing small, minute details of someone's life is not the same as knowing them or valuing them or even understanding them. Connection and understanding are my love and lust. To get to that requires depth. That seems the hardest to find, when everyone seems to want publicity instead of caring, followers instead of friends, lackeys instead of siblings, personal assistants instead of parenting partners.

To reach depths, you have to be willing to go there yourself. You have to find yourself searching for the other's meaning. I haven't been able to, because I haven't wanted to. Hard decisions and, to some, even the really important ones, hard actions and sharp lines drawn in the dirt. Because it means at least for a time, completely separating from all the ballast. Social media, snapshots, edited posts, acquaintances, polite chitchat do more than tire me. It saps the life out of me. All the casual sharing leaves me buzzed and exhausted and I can't find my depth, much less yours.

I feel like I'm wasting time, drowning in the shallows, while yearning for depth.Worrying if I should accept that friend request from that person I have no clue of, trying to smile and be friendly with or avoid the moms who seem to flock to the midday school-close like a social gathering but who can never remember your name, trying to muster the interest in attending the next work reception, fretting if I need to make more posts whether I feel like sharing or not, agonising over explaining me for the umpteenth time to people with hidden agenda's and no matching depth. Sharing everything from the smallest detail to the deepest thought. Sharing is fatiguing. To the point, where I'm not sure what to share or even if I want to share..

Nineteen weeks and counting. Almost half way! After my first two I thought what poppycock when people said "oh, you'll forget everything from a pink cloud". Guess what? I did. How did I forget the nausea, fatigue, pimpled-riddled skin, indigestion and the bloody joint pain?

If I get one more "gosh, you're big" or ''showing early, ehh", I might unleash the full wrath of the emotional train-wreck that I morphed into. Nope, no kidding, it's puppies and sunshine or I'm frazzled mess. I just want a steak for the love of god and a nap somewhere besides a cushion prop mountain on the sofa. Clothes that don't cost a fortune or look like a muumuu. The insult to the injury was my guy's response to my new only slightly more comfortable choice in undergarments.. "are they comfortable?", followed by "are they supportive?".

Waiting for the the it's totally worth it speech? Sorry, going to have to wait it out because despite being worth it, I'm not liking it. Yes pregnancy, I see you and I dislike you. End of story.

P.S. this blog has been brought to you by a preggo in need of a rant. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Wondertje

This working name for this post was The ICSI Baby files… simply diary entries from unexpectedly the last leg of a very long process. This entire year has been rough and the reason I couldn't blog anymore (no promises). While there is still a mountain of other issues to tackle, I now have an extra reason to get back to happy.

T-3
It’s nine am, the day after our official departure on our ICSI journey, and I don’t know what to think or feel. From going peanut butter slow for so long it now all seems to be going at warp speed. No wait, no delays. In fact, we even picked up the complete arsenal of drugs directly after the appointment. To practising self-injecting when we came in not even knowing if and when we would be starting and fearing the worst... another delay, another doctor, another test. And now gearing up to get started this weekend. And if we’re successful Baby J in a month! Unreal. Need time to process. I repeat: Need time to process.

T+5
Day five of shots. The first one my guy did because the self-injected totally freaked me out the moment I really had to do. Why did no one mention it would feel like a spreading bee sting? Day two and three, less stinging. Day four, go figure was really painful. Can we just leave it at not pleasant. Day five was finally so effortless, that in my morning grog I had to peek to make sure I’d actually injected it. Yes... I stab while looking the other way.

T+7
Side effects, what side effects? In my mind, I’m like I’ve got this. I feel completely unaffected. No mood swings... at least no more than usual. No puffiness or discomfort, except having to be strict with my wake-up call. She’s such a morning person, said no one ever. Plus, I have to eat regularly and timely to avoid constant nausea. Not a big thing unless you have the eating habits of a petulant toddler. Guilty.

T+10… Time to rename
Whoa, mama! Head still spinning. Life really does happen when you’re busy making other plans. We went for our Sunday morning run in the forest and while I didn’t think much of the extra wheeze because heck, I’m asthmatic, the swollen sausages fingers and painful chest made me wonder what the heck was up?

So, when we got home I opened my trackers only to see one said test yesterday and the other test tomorrow. I figured it must be the hormones from the drugs that are causing a delay but in the end, I caved and did a test… because it’s not like I don’t keep a stockpile of those suckers. Threw it in the cupboard and went to grab some food because of the aforementioned nausea when empty.  When I went back to get it, there was a squinty fake pink line in both boxes! In disbelief, I showed my guy and he was stoic and said ‘it can’t be’ and went back to watching television and didn’t mention it further. Of course, I mentioned it and we talked and decided to do another test in the morning.

Needless to say, I got no sleep. Six am I did my next shot and then took the test. By then my guy could hardly wait the five minutes needed. The result was another barely there double pink. What the hell to do? I’d taken ten days of drugs of which we had no clue what the effect would be only a baby. Who do you call and ask at six am on of course what was a bloody holiday?

At seven we gave up on the idea of sleep and starting searching for usable telephone numbers. We finally ended up getting in contact with the delivery ward as weekend and holiday calls are taken there. We finally got a call back around 9.30 am, telling us to come in for testing. After scrambling to find somewhere for our kids we went to the hospital and they took a sample for testing and told us to come back in an hour. Our cheapie tests weren’t wrong, but they needed to confirm with blood work. Those results came back that afternoon. All I remember of that call was Congratulations, you’re pregnant!

The next day saw more calls with our specialist as it was highly unexpected and not-standard procedure to get this outcome midway through ICSI, especially when we had zero chance of getting pregnant or as the first sarcastic specialist said "miracles can happen". Hopefully our first echo will show a happy, healthy, little bean. Baby J, February 2018! But for now, we smiling like Cheshire cats and bursting on the insides. It’s been a long time coming..

Clean living..bleh living

Okay, clean living is not bleh but coffee without sugar equates to eternal sadness in my book. No really, I look forward to that sucker more than sleep and I love sleep, naps, nodding off and any other form of closed-eyed rest.

Anywho, I set no resolutions and made no goals but somehow I ended up doing a January kick start. My exercise routine by no means is minimal but this month I wanted more. Only Sunday was a miss due to other activities but for the rest of the month I did six days of exercise a week and switched it up with new and forgotten things that I really enjoy like busting my abs in core training or simply screaming my lungs out to my beats on the hometrainer.

For the first time I did a no-shopping month and actually felt no regret. Cleared out all the accessories and everything else in this home we don't need. To view things as such makes me feel freer. I cook more, even on the days the kids are away, and try to keep them lighter and more veggie loaded, despite the pursed lips I spy at the dinner table.

And I even did a three day sugar break, which I dreaded like a prisoner being sent to the gallows. And in the end it was pretty easy despite having to give up the caffeine as well. Not having my liquid breakfast or lunch made me crave actual meals and carrots have never before tasted like a fresh batch of cookies.

Do I feel reset? Craving a chia seed smoothie? No and double no. I just feel like me. And that's really all I need. That and a morning cup of coffee...with (less) sugar.

The simple things...

It's been church mouse quiet here, hasn't it? Maybe January really is the most depressing month of the year, because I've had an extreme case of the blahs. But it is finally February! So today I just want to share the first beautiful thing that inspired me this year. This marble tray is beyond simple but I can't stop looking at if for the fluidity of the form.

Here's to a great month! When life gives you lemons..., get a pretty tray for them.

Clean start

As much as I love the holiday season, the tree and all the goodies and decor that comes with it, I start getting anxious even before we ring in the new year. We cleared everything holiday out on Monday. And despite looking a bit bare, I’m relieved. In fact, we’re starting a purge. Less stuff! We have stuff from three homes. Things loved or needed. Things purchased on a whim or for a specific purpose. Things, I realize more and more are just things to take care of instead of enhancing life.

I’ve been left reeling a bit this week from several setbacks and disappointments. It’s going to take awhile to find our footing and get back to where we want to be and where we want to go. But we will, because I have the best partner in like ever! Seriously  though, the less stuff we have, the easier it will be. Does that mean morphing into the frugal living blog? Not really, it just means, what we don’t need or use will find a new use or home. And most importantly, whatever comes in has function and longevity. Less stuff, more living!

P.S. The table brush from Iris Hantverk seemed a fitting icon for clearing out. Plus it is one of the few things that I expect we’ll have a need for, for a long time to come..long live the mom files.

I got the kiddies the coolest Christmas colouring poster and ditto magic markers. When the kids were away I would colour in that day's drawing. Wouldn't you know I'd get addicted? I seriously loved it! I looked forward to the next drawing and felt super calmed while colouring. Akin to my daily spot of meditation. So when I saw this adult colouring book for a mere 99 cents I just couldn't resist..

Mirror

What do you see when you look at this picture? I think it's stunning and striking and above all bathed in soul.

“The eyes are the mirror of the soul and reflect everything that seems to be hidden; and like a mirror, they also reflect the person looking into them.” Paulo Coelho.

For that very reason my guy jokingly called me Stevie Wonder last week at the gym as I keep them firmly shut during the entire work-out and only look up to focus on him. The reason I haplessly fall like a newborn deer at yoga if I catch my own eyes mid-pose. The reason I can't look at my lover's face if we have a fight and why I close my eyes in the most passionate of kisses.

Thoughts, emotions and feelings swirl and race and vy for top spot. All hidden yet equally exposed. For those who not just look but see. I hide, I focus, I feel, I revel in that which is hidden just behind the mirror. Who I am is not worn on my sleeve, it's written in my eyes. To be looked at and not seen or to be seen and not valued scares me. That happened this week. Deemed cold, rude and unprofessional, a bad person, for not holding a gaze in an awkward situation but for looking down or at the one whose gaze always lifts mine up.

My eyes will always search for the mirror that reflects not so much the good of a person but the soul behind the eyes. When I look in your eyes, I'm looking for your soul, your thoughts, your emotions. I am looking for you. When you look in my eyes, look for my mine. Look at my soul and I'll look at yours.

The mom files

Designedlifeblog.blogspot.com The mom files

Sitting at my desk looking out at the beautiful flowers and the bees zooming around. And all I'm thinking is how much I miss the kids screaming "mama, ahh, a bee, a bee". Co-parenting is still absolutely the best thing for my kids. That hasn't changed. Man, you should have seen them when they realised there were two trips this summer!

What I didn't realise or maybe selectively forgot was how much I miss their busy, their kid-ness, their tantrums (okay, maybe not so much), their happy. We have a buckload of time to get things done, exercise, relax and anything else we want to do because the job ends at 5 pm and weekends are free. And yet it's hard to enjoy it in quite the same way as I'd imagined.

I'm struggling to muster the giddy anticipation of  Wednesday gym sessions, 8 pm and all the other moments that cordoned off momhood. Instead of getting some much need stuff done on my PC, I find myself looking at pictures. 8 pm just means it is 8 pm, not "we made it to bedtime". This beautiful house that all of a sudden seems that so easier to keep clean, seems very big and empty. And that lovely lawn seems less perfect without the kids running around trying to find the robot mower.

I know it's only a few weeks. And yes I know, they will probably wind me up the first day they get back. Actually that's pretty much a given. My floors will be covered in crumbs by lunch. Someone will have been in timeout. And I will be wondering how much longer till bedtime. But it's doesn't matter because I'm a mom.

Thuis

Designedlifeblog.blogspot.com Thuis

I'm back! Suffering from post-holiday dip as we left blinding sunshine to return to a soaked and cloudy Holland. Back to our hectic schedule after a much needed sun and especially swim filled holiday. Back to work, back to housework, back to exercise (oh, the excesses of multiple daily desserts..) and back to blogging!

Summer

Time to relax, unwind and unplug. Yep, it’s vacation time. I’m still debating whether or not to do any blogging but to be honest I feel like I’ve been running a race lately and need a break.  So, we will have to wait and see if I go bonkers after a few days.. but for now it looks like two weeks of summer sinning.

Enjoy!

The boxed life...

We're moving! Super stoked about our new home. Plenty of space indoors and out. And if I'm honest the hot tub and master suite with walk-in closet and killer bathroom are pretty sweet.
Now to get exciting about packing our current home into countless boxes. How come the first thing I pack, seems to be the first thing I end up needing? And the growing piles of boxes and messy rooms makes me seriously grumpy (I'm talking queen of Grumpville). So wish me luck in my fight against the moving boxes!

Peptalk

I had to share the coolest, most totally honest view of parenting around. The peptalk for parents cards by Studio Flash are spot on. I'm continuously bouncing between 'no' and 'whatever, is it bedtime yet?' So I can totally relate..except on sleep being the new sex. :)

Have a great, extra long weekend!

Nest

Homebody meets home proud, that's me. Home is incredibly important to me. It's where I feel safe, comfortable, happy and myself. So I'm pretty much always tweaking and updating it to meet the needs at the moment. Right now, I have an insatiable need for a home. For all four of us. Only recently did I realise how stressed home has been making me. This place, that I made my own, feels less than home.

Between the two of us, we have three houses. Two homes that we don't live in and this rental which I made home for me and the kids. My partner moved in but that's the thing. Since he wasn't here from the get-go, it's not ours. Things gets constantly switched between our places to make space for his and our stuff as opposed to just my stuff. Pretty much every weekend sees the car loaded up with yet more gear. And with summer weather here, we need to travel back and forth more, with all that gear and paraphernalia, To work on his place, to keep it form disintegrating. And to enjoy summer with the kids in the garden that this place misses.

It's driving me looney tunes! Home all of a sudden feels like stop-gap, temporary housing, yet permanent as the other two homes keep us in limbo. Home is so much more than were we eat, sleep and play. And I need it to be, again! It's the place we come back to when we're happy, sick or tired. The place where we dream, discover and grow. Where memories are created. Where we are family. Home.. our nest...our together.

The big yellow

A couple of weeks ago, when spring was just starting to bud, we took the kids to a local theme park. To be honest, I wasn't expecting much. But I'm eating my words doubly. The kids had a blast.. all three of them. Our daredevil fell in love with roller coasters and I remember why I have a love/hate relationship with them, with the emphasis shifting to hate..

And now that I've finally gotten around to going through the pictures, I'm in love with the fresh, slightly chilly part of spring, where the light is just right!
