Diaries...Run

It’s about that time..part two in the diaries series; the run edition. I have been running for five months now. I started with a running group which I still attend once a week. I go another two solo. In five months from embarrassed doing a mini lap in the store for shoe advice to anxiously awaiting my first run of the week. I recently did a 90 minute run that I am super proud of! Doing my victory dance of hip-hop head bopping booty shaking again. But seriously how did I get here and where am I going..
I was that kid that always got picked last in gym class (yep, after the fat kid and after the one with the sprain) and who would pray for a torrential downpour, sick gym teacher or any other reason to not have physical ed. So it goes without saying I never did a sport after school or was a girl who went to the gym. I never got sport nuts or more nicely put sports enthusiasts. Why, in heavens name would I crave to exert, sweating and tiring, myself? What craziness had them possessed. Don’t get me wrong, I get the benefits of exercising, I just never got excited about doing it. And the idea of running around my neighbourhood in sports gear totally left me dazed with confusion. But I get it now, boy do I get it. I got it on my first practise despite feeling nauseous to my pit for two minutes of running. I felt it when I did my first 10 minutes. My first half an hour. My first 55 minutes. My first 70. Right up to the 90. And everything in between. That feeling is waiting for me in my pit every time I lace up my shoes. That feeling is what makes the anxiousness I feel every time I get ready and I mean everytime, the cold and dark of early morning, the pressure on my schedule, all worth it. What I feel is a rush. Sometimes not, sometimes small, sometimes greater. But when it’s greater, it’s euphoric!
That rush is why I have never skip a run. Why I go in the rain, the dark, the cold or when I feel like a wreck. Why I can and have to do it on an almost empty stomach. It’s more than the sense of accomplishment. I am pumped after a cardio session. Stoked after I do a new yoga pose. But I can sleep after those and often do. I can’t sleep after a run..ever. A rush so good that when I get home, despite physically being spent, you can find me shaking my booty like a madwoman from the tropics (oh, I forgot I am J). Same after class, I bike like a madwoman from the Netherlands, still shaking and bopping. I keep going because I am so pumped and do so until I can barely muster the stairs to take a shower. I only stop moving when my mental catches up. And even then I still have extra energy in my veins.. a little bit of leftover TAKE IT DOWN!
Sometimes it feels effortless but it is never so, especially the start. God, I hate the start but most times I hit that sweet spot somewhere around the three thirds mark. The sweet spot is often just after ‘I can’t do this’, ‘I ache’, ‘my fingers are shriveling’, ‘there is a pain in my side’. It switches to ‘I got this’, ‘done deal’, ‘wings’ and ‘I love this’. It then feels effortless because the physical aspect is no longer important. The mental push that comes when I physically want to tap out. My fingers are frozen, my shins ache and there is a crick in my side but I don’t feel it anymore. It’s about that time I stop counting or start singing aloud if my music is on, when I start smiling and stop caring..about the rain, the passers-by, the to-get done list, the everything else. When my only goal, my only thoughts are the steps I’m taking and want to keep taking. When I don’t hear the whistle or bump up the timer. It’s not about being fast that flying feeling, it's about rising above the effort. It’s weird because it feels like they are not my legs and on the other hand I know it’s me. In the zone and the zone is literally as much of the path under my feet as my eyes can see. Nothing else matters. And that matters. I am restless and have enough to juggle so no matter how quiet and concentrated I seem I’m simply not. For me to reach a focus, in mind and body, is a unicum. Checkmate, baby!
That’s the why and how. The where? That’s the simplest part..as far as I can go. On the way I see goalposts like 10 English miles, 2 hours and 21 kilometres but what I see beyond is the horizon.

Shopped DDW-stlye by studioRUIG

Ok, I went for the design but did a bit of shopping as well. What are you going to do when you’re a shopaholic, there’s sale at studioRUIG and there are pieces in your favorite color (eggplant) and favorite shape (pencil skirt)? Make a purchase of course, like duh!

Unpractical to some for autumn.. a pair of shorts, with a funky fluorescent button to the back, but I am a barelegged kind of girl, winter or not, plus you can always wear tights and boots. More jewel tones with the Stella McCartney heeled sandels, minimal crocodile embossed bag (post soon), twig bracelet, dome ring, jewelled collar and a soft and girlie scent.

Be still my heart.. a woolen pencil skirt with adjustable zip to the back and leather on the bottom half. No brainer, now to figure out how to navigate steps in this smoking hot Mortica Addams-tight number. Sticking with the leather texture I'm loving a pop with the Isabel Marant Prissy and a silver snakeskin clutch. The sculpted cuff and double pendant chain from &Other Stories complete not compete.

P.S. I also couldn’t resist a pair of the most beautiful minimalist espresso cups but those warrant their own post..

DDW 14

Despite looking forward to DutchDesignWeek 2014 I could barely muster the energy to go. Maybe it’s the switch from summer to autumn and then back to summer that has me feeling like a sloth. Seriously my bathrobe and fuzzy slippers (just kidding about the slippers) need a break..
But on the day before last, wind, rain, a failed attempt with kids nor lack of muster or even an unbegun cleaning routine couldn’t deter me from at least taking a good look. Old favourites, new designs, good vibes, a bit of shopping and a final stop at Pinkie’s Patisserie for macarons and I’m good! Here’s an account of my visit, taken mostly with my iPhone as I forgot my camera.

I love the use of cheap building materials such as all the plywood furniture and decorative tree from the Karwei stand. Another example is the use of building rubble bags as planters, ingenious!

Who knew black could be so sexy, seriously has me considering scrapping the planned swing for an outdoor shower.

Loving the combination of materials; mash-ups rule! Stone, wood, metal, glass, you name it, it got mixed. Even furniture dying got an update. And what didn't saw itself used in a new way. The locking system on a cabinet to deter any thief, a bell lamp or well lamp, a locker made of wood or gold mesh cupboard, a railing so beautiful I rather risk tripping that smudging.

Some of the lovely products on show. I love the modernity, especially combined with all the wood. From light, sleek and smooth to the raw edge in the garden furniture. For everyone and everything, with a large and miniature kids bed and designed rocker to suspended gardens and cool outdoor furniture.

And what's design without art? Here are some true beauties. From wearable art in the form of stellar shoes and rocking frocks. To matte black powder porcelain sculptures, gorgeous bowls and fun and funky flower vases. Not forgetting the sponge ape man or giant bunny of course!

Diaries...That girl

Recently someone reiterated a statement I’ve heard quite a bit…’you’re not the same girl’. On the one hand I’m like 'what’ and on the other I’m like 'no shit’. But it got me thinking about change. Have I changed? Probably. But exactly what has changed that makes people say that sentence..
If you never change, you never experience, you never learn, you never grow. In fact change is so much part of my DNA, I can’t do without it. I feel frustrated when I’m told to calm down, take it easy, go with the flow. Don’t you decide what your flow is? Don’t you want to move? Aren’t your engines revved and waiting? Don’t you feel alive for life? That’s the way I feel. It always has been. What’s different is the intensity of that need and the fact that it shows. I’m off the scales introverted so I let very little slip, by design and by effort but I do that less and less, by design and by effort. I can no longer keep a poker face like I used to and also feel no need to always keep my opinion to myself. I think that makes the contrast less startling as the quiet exterior with the not so garden variety views but extremely sensitive personality can be a bit disconcerting. While I still shave off the tops and depths for most and in most situations, it’s not the flat line like the general landscape of the country I live in. That is not my personality and now I let that show because it’s who I am. And everyone else is taken, no?
Another such sentence I hear is ‘you walk, you dress, with confidence’. Yep, no denying I was never a sweats and kicks kind of girl, in fact I just bought my first pair of sweats for my birthday back in February.. fitted high-waisted pair I wear mostly with heels.. But what has changed is that, that also comes out to play more, that being my personality. I’m not going to lie. That personality has seen pretty much a complete refresh of my style in the last year or two. If I think about it, it is the change on the inside reflected on the outside. I remember very clearly walking slumped over, trying not to be noticed and blend in. As a kid, definitely as a teenager, at collage, at work, as a mom and even as a partner. Hidden amongst the crowd and in the roles. Hiding for fear because heck yea, I’m human.
Head down, work hard, keep calm or at least look it was the motto of that girl. That girl mourned the lost of that life, that shield, that boy. Much effort and force to change that motto into head up & I’m right here, even on the days when I feel more human than the day before.
So guess what, that girl grew up..she’s this woman! Maybe a bit later, slower, or a more accelerated change than others but here she is, for better or worse. That girl will always be a part of this woman’s but there the buck stops. I was that girl who became this woman.

Scheduled...

How did November get here so quick? Seems like I just finished with the birthday months and now I’m planning Saint Nick and Christmas? But that’s another post as I am already getting the kids surprises together, including (almost tradition now) a purchase from the H&M All for Children collection! Will post as soon as that package arrives, eagerly ripped from the postman's hands..
But this week I want to share;
  • A bit of weekend reflection because sometimes a single comment gets you thinking.
  • A view to Dutch Design Week; what DDW 2014 had to show me.
  • A beauty of a cabinet deserves only beautiful things, so this is my wish list jewelry edit.
  • A shoppers view to DDW, because no trip is complete without a purchase or two or three.
