Scheduled...kids week

I got some lovely news that I am super excited about; Mika's room is featured on Apartment Therapy as was Zoe Isobel's. &What a timing as all this week's posts have to do with my terrific two;
  • From what they will be sporting this fall/winter,
  • To a cool brand that will be featured in the updates/finishing of their spaces,
  • Followed by more cool kid inspired fun design products,
  • And to round if off some budget-friendly kids styling that wowed me!
I declare this Kids Week!

Reflections

I used to wonder why my big sis kept a diary? How odd to write your thoughts, right? Guess I truly am a late bloomer because now I commit my thoughts to paper, or in my case blog. I am thinker, seriously I'm striking that pose right now..
I was joking just this week about being in my own world other wise known as the techni-coloured space that is my head. I love it there to be honest but since I do have to live in the real world..it’s the one with actual food, I write so I can get back to the world with coffee machines and cookie stashes (still working/not working on healthy eating habits). And I share these mind-crinkles because maybe they are relatable or at least they make me feel just as wacky but at least relatable.
I write about m running and the sense of accomplishment that gives me. And while that is still the case, this thought is on the flip side. The side that the mirror shows..the reflection. Trust me, as I pant my way through a work-out I’m not thinking about clothes or the way I look in them nor even imagined that it would have an impact on that aspect. I work-out for the accomplished feeling it gives me. So much so I set a new goal. One that requires even more work but that gives me energy because I love trying. I really, really do. Odd as heck to say, because till I turned 30 I thought exercising was odd and only something you did to loose weight if crash-dieting didn’t work not that I dieted. Actually everything changed when I turned 30, but that’s a story for another time. Back to the reflection…
You cannot depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus ~ Mark Twain
I think that sums it up. I am enormously critical of myself, was horribly teased from preschool into adulthood and so my reflection was something to avoid. I literally wouldn’t look at myself after I got dressed in the morning (lipstick smeared on teeth is not a good look and no one tells you, argh). Didn’t wear half of what I bought because my body wasn’t good enough after shopping euphoria wore off. Only joined Facebook so I could monitor for fugly pics. Will not look at a photo after it’s taken, hence the horrible passport and licence photo’s. I took a picture after I got dressed so I could criticise myself in detail the rest of the day, coupled with a most horrendous nickname for myself. What I saw was never what I wanted. Ever. No matter how much effort I put in or how confident I seemed I was never comfortable and therefore never proud. My focus was set to ugly and unappreciative and so I rarely saw anything else.
I started working out regularly after my second bundle of joy otherwise know as stretchmark city, kicked it up a notched when I turned 30 because that milestone scared me and bumped it up further in May when I started over. It’s then I started with the weekly routine I now do that consists of cardio, power yoga, running and daily core exercises. Each time I make it through, whether flying or by the skin of my teeth, I feel great and that, that changed my focus. My focus is not on what I can’t, what I don’t have or have too much of. The focus is what I can, what I have and exactly as it is..now.
Not an overnight status change, because I had nightmares a couple of weeks in that my calves were out of proportion and gasp..muscular. My body changed, ever so slightly but from crown to tip. Yes, my calves are taunt..with muscle. My slight double chin became slighter. My arms don’t flab about but instead have a vein that pops from shoulder to wrist esp. after a workout. My waist is trimmer, better than before kids and then some. My cup no longer runneth over. Okay, that last one still has me. But overall I feel and look more glowy for lack of a better word.
Someone told me ‘gosh, I don’t even recognise you from that photo’, even though the photo wasn’t that old. Had the same feeling when I saw some photos from a super carefree period (ah, college days). Another answered ‘you might be surprised to find now jealously instead’ when I said I was the teased one. I immediately thought 'wat een lariekoek’ because I still couldn’t see it. It took me a good while to look at me and be happy with me. But each time I looked I saw something that I liked more and more; strength. I earned it. Me, just me, me as I am now. I see strength, because i feel strong. Not only physical strength because heck my knees buckle more often than not when my four year throws herself at me with all her youthful energy. But a strength that stems both from being fit and from being confident and passionate about my life and that was always the centre of my ideal woman..A confident sense of self!
And so at the same time my physical appearance changed, so did my outlook but accelerated. That shift in focus made me appreciative and made me pretty, far more than the smaller physical changes. I still take my picture in the morning and only after a good long look but now more often than not think I look damn good and that terrible nickname is my 'who shall not be named' (geeks will get the reference).
I like the reflection I see now because I like the person I am. Strong, inside and out! And so there is more interest in fashion and yep I wear those clothes previously squished in the back and reserved for a ‘better me’. I place pictures of myself instead of asking them to be taken down. Slouch gone, chin up, chest out.
My eyes finally see in my reflection a strong, positive, appreciative, accepting and stunning me; Fit! I see that because that is who I am.
We don't see things as they are, we see them as we are ~ Anais Nin

P.S. Because tailoring sizes down is expensive and leaves a less than desirable fit and just because I love fashion, I will be doing a post about replenishing my wardrobe.,or the start of!

Can I move in?

There is an insane amount of beautiful homes out there to inspire you and boy do I feel inspired when I see a great home. And then I come back down to earth and realise how much I love my own space and how hard it would be live in a space where beautiful outguns comfort and ease.
So when I find a home that feel automatically livable, I not only get inspired, I also get excited. This home when straight to my favourites as just such a home. I think it is bang on with the airiness and lightness of  feel. Minimal and modern but not stern. And plants, often sadly lacking from modern spaces! Green makes me happy, large corner sofas make me happy. Messy beds with lots of fluffy pillows makes me happy. This homes makes me happy.

Home and photos from Studio Oink, whose work I think is amazing! Go check them out for more amazing pictures of this home as well as other projects and products.

What's in my bag...sports

Well, I said no more bags except maybe a Rockie. Every rule has an exception and a loophole. The Rockie is still my ‘get out of jail card’ but here comes the loophole. A sports bag! Bit by bit workout gear has crept into my closet. I now have a nice pile of work-out clothes for different occasions and seasons. Then there is the cupboard where I keep my tracker, watch, smartphone holder, resistance bands and yoga mat. What I have been missing though is something to lug all that stuff around in. I have been using one of those cloth protective sacks that come with what else..a bag purchase. However not much fits in, it does not close as knots don’t count, it has a spreading tear along the seam, there are no interior pockets (squished energy bar stuck on the bottom anyone?) and is just not built for outdoor use.

When I saw this gym bag on the H&M site made of a neoprene like material I was immediately sold. I flipping love neoprene. The fact that is has all of the above functions and can be made smaller, flipping checks my boxes and then some. That it’s pink on the inside is an added bonus because I’m a girlie girl and want to look pretty and it’s called pretty in pink for a reason.
 And because a bag is nothing without stuff to fill it with, here’s what my bag holds;
  • I always carry a wind-capable work-out vest with me after having frozen my grapes into raisins..twice (stubborn much..)
  • Hello, my tunes go with me everywhere. The only thing I want to hear on a run is my playlist of beats pounding against my eardrums.
  • A watch that I use for the timer and stopwatch and on which I have yet to set the actual time because the work-out lasts till it’s done.
  • A tracker because an obsessive like me needs to know how well I am competing against myself.
  • Either my Kor water bottle or the mini bottles that fit into a running belt because I pant like a dog. I’m talking tongue lagging out of side of mouth ugly breathing. The breathing equivalent of the ugly cry..
  • Last but not least fructose tablets because breakfast is not my friend and a shot of espresso is sometimes just not enough.
Not pictured but still in there.. a towel and a bottle of liquid chalk from pole dancing class. A great work-out and body confidence builder but six work-outs and four different activities a week is a bridge too far. But better to be prepared. So that´s my bag!

Classics... reinvented

Just like my interior, I like my fashion classics..with a twist. Basics are great and versatile and time-saving but I’m a bit odd, a tad wacky and oodles cheeky and I’m totally OK with that. I remember in high-school choosing a pair of metallic blue Skechers over that year's Nike trainers, which of course everyone else was wearing. Now luckily I can really appreciate having my own taste and style. Life is just too short to be boring.

I love, love, love a hint of the unexpected that you might not even spot. But if you look closely you will probably find at least one quirky little detail, like the meringue ring and miniature flower bouquet necklace I sported earlier in the week with a black shift dress at the office. In tribute to the slightly unexpected, twists on a classic, is this little gathering of the classic shirt... reinvented.

This white button-down from Cos looks the part from the front but turn around and it’s less formal and a lot more fun. Not exactly meant for the more formal of offices, but that’s why I love it. Throw a white top underneath to keep the puffed effect but lose the skin or a coloured one for a bit more fun. For me though, it’s a skin thing. All business, but just on the surface..

This cropped version is great because cropped means I can show-off some of the great detailing on the bottom half and it's so good for balancing out wider pieces on the bottom! Perfect for culottes or a great neoprene midi skirt I have from Ann-Sofie Back whose perfect little Velcro strap will now definitely not be obscured from view.

And while browsing I spotted this funky tuxedo cropped version from The Laden Showroom. The crop and chest flap pockets are decidedly old-school meet new and I love it!

Corner fixes...the master

Busted, as this is the second corner fix in the same month but I’m the first to admit that I suck at pacing myself. To my defence, this cost me very little (time and money wise) to accomplish.
I am still gunning for making this an arty corner as outlined here but till then I’m content with this mini update. While my kicks are still by far my most comfortable pair of shoes and the only ones with value above and beyond being just pretty, I felt this spot could do so much more than just be a spot to rest my trainers between work-outs.
Looking around I realised this is my room and I love having my things out where I can see and therefore use them. There is no mistaking this is a woman’s space with shoes and clutches out on display and so I figured why not take it a step further..

Out came my lovely white Wang which sad to say looks like a shapeless lump in the cloth cover, so that had to go. And now resting in full view on a HAY J77 chair that was otherwise just collecting dust in storage while waiting for Mika’s to transition from a highchair. Just these two things together totally make that spot sing. But to make it all singing and dining I added a print. While searching for the Mini & Maximus print that turned out to be sold-out I found this similar and cheaper one from The Birth of Cool Prints. That and a standard frame from Ikea cost me 20 euro’s. The collage of smaller images is an ad that came with the cacti I ordered for my new bookshelves.
Last but not least a bit more greenery to compliment the orchids already in the room. The plant came from the local flower shop and housed in a washable paper bag that I also found in my stash. A steal as plant pots typically outprice the plants they house. All in all this corner got a nice budget-friendly revamp. And pieces that were otherwise just taking up storage space now have a use. One small step for this corner, one giant leap for my master.

P.S. expect to see more snippets of my room as I tweak and twerk..the room not myself.
